How do I get the mother-in-law to like me she is British?

I met her first time at the Christmas, we go to stay with them at their home in Leeds. My husband had told me to buy her lingerie for a gift that she likes it, and she gave me the sizes when I ring her up so I thought it was fine. But then she gets a dirty look on the face as she opens it and did not talk to me the whole time we are there. I hear her, behind my back, saying that I am just "Euro-trash" why she would say that? She also was complaining that I used to work in the windows in Amsterdam but I only did that for one year why is it bad?
